Suboxone and Sublocade
Suboxone is a daily under-the-tongue film that contains buprenorphine and naloxone. Buprenorphine is a partial opioid agonist, which means it activates the same receptors in the brain as opioids, but only partly. This helps reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms, and restores normal functioning. Naloxone is an opioid antagonist, which means it blocks the effects of opioids. This helps prevent overdose and misuse of Suboxone. Suboxone is prescribed by trained providers who can monitor your progress and adjust the Suboxone dose as needed. Sublocade is a monthly injection that contains buprenorphine. It works similarly to Suboxone, but it provides a steady release of the medication into your body. This eliminates the need for daily dosing and reduces the risk of diversion or abuse. Sublocade is also prescribed by trained providers who can administer the injection and provide follow-up care.
Vivitrol
Vivitrol is a monthly injection that contains naltrexone. It works differently from Suboxone and Sublocade, as it is a pure opioid antagonist. It does not activate the opioid receptors, but instead blocks them completely. This prevents any opioid from having any effect on your brain, and reduces cravings and relapse risk. Vivitrol requires that you stop taking all opioids and buprenorphine products at least 7 days before starting the treatment, otherwise you may experience severe withdrawal symptoms. Vivitrol is also prescribed by trained providers who can administer the injection and provide follow-up care.
